Editorial policy

How we write, what we include, what we exclude, and how we maintain a non-official reference posture.

Editorial policy

Customs Lookup is a reference layer. We aim for clarity, neutral language, and a clean separation between our explanations and official sources.

What we publish

  • Explanations of HS structure (sections, chapters, headings, subheadings).
  • Decision checklists to help users confirm facts before using official tools.
  • Transparent estimation logic for landed cost (reference-only).
  • Directories of official tools and publicly available government resources.

What we do not publish

  • Personalized classification advice or “your code is X” answers.
  • Guarantees, audit-defense promises, or “approved” language.
  • Rehosted official databases, scraped tariff measures, or copied legal texts.

Quality and updates

  • We prioritize official sources and cite them on the Sources page.
  • When a page is revised, we focus on clarity and removing ambiguity rather than adding volume.
  • We correct factual errors when identified and remove content that becomes misleading.

Advertising and independence

The site is funded via display advertising . Ads do not influence our editorial choices. We do not sell paid placements, “preferred tool” positioning, or sponsored classification outcomes.
