What this code covers

HS code 621210 covers bras / brassieres under Chapter 62 (articles of apparel, not knitted). Across the 5 destinations priced here the duty runs from 5% to 18%, and Canada is the dearest. Destination tax is charged on top, on the customs value plus any duty, and runs from 5% to 23% across these markets, highest in Portugal. All 5 rates below have been read from the tariff schedule of the market that charges them.

What that costs: 621210 into Germany

An illustrative consignment of 621210 invoiced at EUR 2,000.00, priced in EUR because a threshold is set in the destination's currency and nothing here is converted.

Goods value on the invoice EUR 2,000.00
International freight EUR 120.00
Cargo insurance EUR 30.00
Value the duty is charged on, CIF basis EUR 2,150.00
Duty at 6.5% EUR 139.75
Germany tax at 19%, charged on the value plus the duty EUR 435.05
Total, before commercial charges EUR 2,724.80

And if the consignment were small

Germany relieves nothing: the relief was abolished, so the duty above is charged whatever the consignment is worth. A smaller shipment pays less because the value is lower, not because a threshold spared it.

Selling rather than buying? EUR 2,724.80 is what your buyer in Germany pays to take delivery of this consignment, yours to pay if you quote DDP and theirs if you quote DAP: Exporting to Germany sets out who collects it and what your invoice has to say.

An illustration, not a quotation: broker fees, handling and any trade remedy on the origin sit outside it. Price 621210 on your own numbers in the duty calculator.

Markets with no figure recorded

United States: United States splits 6212.10 into 4 tariff lines and they do not carry the same rate: the schedule returned 2.7 to 16.9%. A single percentage cannot represent that honestly, so no United States figure is recorded and the calculator falls back to its disclosed category average.

Re-check first: The United Kingdom charges a brassiere sold alone and one sold in a retail set at the same rate, and the United States lines under this subheading do not agree, so no United States figure is recorded. Whether the garment is a brassiere rather than a bodice or a swim top is the prior question.

What falls under 621210

  • Brassieres, whether or not knitted or crocheted
  • Bras of every construction including moulded, wired, soft cup, sports and nursing bras

What's specifically excluded

These look similar but belong under a different code:

  • 611241: Swimwear of synthetic fibres, including bikini tops sold as swim sets
  • 610711: Men's or boys' underpants and briefs of cotton
  • 610990: T-shirts, singlets and other vests of man-made fibres

Commonly confused with

611241: Bikini tops
A bikini top presented as part of a swim set is swimwear, while a comparable garment sold separately and built as a foundation garment is a brassiere. Underwiring, hook and eye fastening and adjustable straps point to 6212, and a matching brief sold with it points away.

610990: Crop tops and bralettes
A soft bralette can be argued as a knitted top rather than a body supporting garment. The test is whether the article is designed to support, so an unstructured crop top with no shelf, band or fastening is a top, and one with a supportive band is a brassiere.

Classification & cost note

Heading 6212 does something almost nothing else in the apparel chapters does: it covers body supporting garments whether or not they are knitted, which means the construction question that decides nearly every other garment code is simply switched off here. A woven bra and a knitted bra share a heading. That makes this one of the few apparel classifications an importer can settle without asking the mill about fabric structure, and it is worth knowing precisely because the instinct built up everywhere else in Chapters 61 and 62 is the wrong instinct here. What is left to argue is the boundary with ordinary tops, decided by whether the article is designed to support, and the boundary with swimwear, decided by whether the piece belongs to a swim set. Sizing and fit compliance is a commercial matter with no tariff consequence.

Typical products: Moulded cup underwired bras · Soft cup and non wired bras · Sports bras in knitted synthetics · Nursing and maternity bras · Strapless and multiway bras · Bralettes with supportive bands

What the notes to section XI say

Chapter 62 sits in section XI, textiles and textile articles, where a section note governs every chapter in the section and applies before the heading notes below; the 10 reaching chapter 62 name no heading this site holds a code under, and they are quoted whole on the chapter 62 page, read from https://www.trade-tariff.service.gov.uk/api/v2/sections/11 on 2026-09-08.

What the nomenclature says about heading 6212

621210 is a subheading of 6212, brassières, girdles, corsets, braces, suspenders, garters and similar articles and parts thereof, whether or not knitted or crocheted , and it is the only code this site holds under that heading.

No numbered note to chapter 62 takes heading 6212 as its subject, which is what the published notes say rather than a gap on this page: the heading is defined by its own wording above and by the note to the chapter, quoted in full on the chapter 62 page.

One further note to chapter 62 names heading 6212 from elsewhere in its own text, usually to send goods into it or away from it, and the sentence that names it is quoted below.

Note 1 to chapter 62, which is about something else

This chapter applies only to made-up articles of any textile fabric other than wadding, excluding knitted or crocheted articles (other than those of heading 6212).

Read from the notes to chapter 62 published in the UK Trade Tariff by HM Revenue and Customs, at https://www.trade-tariff.service.gov.uk/api/v2/chapters/62, with the heading title from https://www.trade-tariff.service.gov.uk/api/v2/headings/6212, on 2026-09-07, with the whole layer and the reason a heading note is a chapter note set out on the chapter 62 page. These notes are part of the international text of the Harmonized System, so the rule is the same whichever destination a shipment is going to, and it decides classification and never a rate.

Questions about 621210

Does knitted or woven construction matter for bras?

No, and this is the unusual part. Heading 6212 covers these garments whether or not knitted or crocheted, so the question that decides nearly every other apparel code is switched off here.

Is a bralette a bra?

It depends on whether it is designed to support. An unstructured crop top with no band, shelf or fastening is a knitted top; one with a supportive band or shelf is a brassiere of heading 6212.

Where does a sports bra sit?

In heading 6212 with other brassieres. Being made for athletic use does not move it into sportswear, because the heading covers body supporting garments by function rather than by end use.

Are bra straps and extenders classified as parts?

Heading 6212 covers these garments and their parts, so detachable straps and extenders supplied as accessories generally fall in the same heading rather than taking a haberdashery code. Hook and eye tape sold by the metre is a different article and does not.
