HS Code Detail
851660 Chapter 85 · Electronics Electric ovens, cookers, hobs and grillers
Six-digit subheading in Electronics, chapter 85 of the Harmonized System, priced here for 4 destination markets.
Anatomy of 851660
You will declare against a longer local code that begins 851660: ten digits in the United Kingdom, eight in the European Union, and the first six the same everywhere. Which trailing digits apply is what the 4 rates below differ on.
What this code covers
Import duty by country
MFN duty rate · 4 countries| Country | Duty | VAT |
|---|---|---|
| 🇦🇺Australia | 5% | 10% |
| 🇩🇪Germany | 2.7% | 19% |
| 🇵🇹Portugal | 2.7% | 23% |
| 🇬🇧United Kingdom | 2% | 20% |
Rates shown are MFN (Most Favoured Nation), the default for WTO members. Preferential FTA rates may be lower with valid proof of origin. Section 301 / anti-dumping surcharges on Chinese-origin goods are not included.
What that costs: 851660 into Germany
An illustrative consignment of 851660 invoiced at EUR 2,000.00, priced in EUR because a threshold is set in the destination's currency and nothing here is converted.
| Goods value on the invoice | EUR 2,000.00 |
| International freight | EUR 120.00 |
| Cargo insurance | EUR 30.00 |
| Value the duty is charged on, CIF basis | EUR 2,150.00 |
| Duty at 2.7% | EUR 58.05 |
| Germany tax at 19%, charged on the value plus the duty | EUR 419.53 |
| Total, before commercial charges | EUR 2,627.58 |
And if the consignment were small
Germany relieves nothing: the relief was abolished, so the duty above is charged whatever the consignment is worth. A smaller shipment pays less because the value is lower, not because a threshold spared it.
Selling rather than buying? EUR 2,627.58 is what your buyer in Germany pays to take delivery of this consignment, yours to pay if you quote DDP and theirs if you quote DAP: Exporting to Germany sets out who collects it and what your invoice has to say.
An illustration, not a quotation: broker fees, handling and any trade remedy on the origin sit outside it. Price 851660 on your own numbers in the duty calculator.

Markets with no figure recorded
United States: United States splits 8516.60 into 2 tariff lines and they do not carry the same rate: the schedule returned 0 to 2.7%. A single percentage cannot represent that honestly, so no United States figure is recorded and the calculator falls back to its disclosed category average.
Canada: Canada splits 8516.60 into 3 tariff lines and they do not carry the same rate: the schedule returned 0 to 8%. A single percentage cannot represent that honestly, so no Canada figure is recorded and the calculator falls back to its disclosed category average.
Re-check first: The United Kingdom prices cookers, hobs, grillers and built-in ovens at one rate, so the type of appliance does not move the figure there. The United States lines disagree and no United States figure is recorded. A microwave oven is 851650 in either market.
What falls under 851660
- Other ovens, cookers, cooking plates, boiling rings, grillers and roasters, electro thermic and for domestic use
- Freestanding and built in electric cookers, hobs, ovens, air fryers and countertop grills
What's specifically excluded
These look similar but belong under a different code:
Commonly confused with
851650: Microwave ovens
Microwaves are separated out one subheading earlier, so this line covers conventional heating only. A combination appliance is resolved on principal function, and a built in oven that also offers a microwave mode usually stays here while a microwave with a grill element does not.
841981: Commercial catering equipment
The heading is limited to domestic appliances. Commercial ranges, combination steam ovens and catering grills belong in Chapter 84, and the distinction rests on construction and duty rating rather than on the premises the appliance ends up in.
Classification & cost note
This subheading is the residual home for domestic electric cooking apparatus and it has absorbed a great deal of new product in recent years, air fryers being the clearest example. An air fryer is a convection oven with a fan and a basket, so it belongs here rather than in any fryer specific line, and importers who look for something more descriptive tend to end up in the wrong place. Induction hobs are worth a note of their own: they heat by induction rather than resistance, but they remain electro thermic domestic cooking appliances and are classified in this subheading with the rest. Beyond the tariff, cooking appliances carry energy labelling obligations in most developed markets, and built in appliances additionally have to meet installation and dimensional standards that are checked by market surveillance rather than at the frontier.
Typical products: Freestanding electric cookers · Built in single and double ovens · Induction and ceramic hobs · Air fryers and countertop contact grills
What the notes to section XVI say
Chapter 85 sits in section XVI, machinery and mechanical appliances; electrical equipment; parts thereof, sound recorders and reproducers, television image and sound recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles, where a section note governs every chapter in the section and applies before the heading notes below; the 6 reaching chapter 85 name no heading this site holds a code under, and they are quoted whole on the chapter 85 page, read from https://www.trade-tariff.service.gov.uk/api/v2/sections/16 on 2026-09-08.
What the nomenclature says about heading 8516
851660 is a subheading of 8516, electric instantaneous or storage water heaters and immersion heaters; electric space-heating apparatus and soil-heating apparatus; electrothermic hairdressing apparatus (for example, hairdryers, hair curlers, curling tong heaters) and hand dryers; electric smoothing irons; other electrothermic appliances of a kind used for domestic purposes; electric heating resistors, other than those of heading 8545 , and this site holds 4 other codes under the same heading, which every rule below governs equally.
No numbered note to chapter 85 takes heading 8516 as its subject, which is what the published notes say rather than a gap on this page: the heading is defined by its own wording above and by the note to the chapter, quoted in full on the chapter 85 page.
One further note to chapter 85 names heading 8516 from elsewhere in its own text, usually to send goods into it or away from it, and the sentence that names it is quoted below.
Note 4 to chapter 85, which is about something else
The heading does not, however, apply to fans or ventilating or recycling hoods incorporating a fan, whether or not fitted with filters (heading 8414), centrifugal clothes-dryers (heading 8421), dishwashing machines (heading 8422), household washing machines (heading 8450), roller or other ironing machines (heading 8420 or 8451), sewing machines (heading 8452), electric scissors (heading 8467) or to electro-thermic appliances (heading 8516).
Read from the notes to chapter 85 published in the UK Trade Tariff by HM Revenue and Customs, at https://www.trade-tariff.service.gov.uk/api/v2/chapters/85, with the heading title from https://www.trade-tariff.service.gov.uk/api/v2/headings/8516, on 2026-09-07, with the whole layer and the reason a heading note is a chapter note set out on the chapter 85 page. These notes are part of the international text of the Harmonized System, so the rule is the same whichever destination a shipment is going to, and it decides classification and never a rate.
Questions about 851660
How is an air fryer classified?
As a domestic electro thermic cooking appliance in 8516.60. An air fryer is a small convection oven with a fan and a basket, so it belongs with ovens and grillers rather than in any separate line for fryers.
Are induction hobs classified differently from ceramic ones?
No. Both are domestic electro thermic cooking apparatus and sit in the same subheading. The method of generating heat does not separate them at the six digit level.
