What is the difference between HS and HTS codes?
HS codes and HTS codes are related but different classification systems.
HS Code (Harmonized System):
- 6 digits, international standard
- Used by 200+ countries
- Same in every country for the first 6 digits
HTS Code (Harmonized Tariff Schedule):
- 10 digits, US-specific
- First 6 digits match the HS code
- Additional 4 digits for US-specific classification
- Used for US import duty calculation
Other extensions:
- EU Combined Nomenclature (CN): 8 digits
- UK Trade Tariff: 10 digits
- Australia: 10 digits
Which do you need?
- Importing to US: 10-digit HTS from hts.usitc.gov
- Exporting from US: Schedule B number
- Importing to EU: 8-digit CN code via trade.ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/dds2/taric
- General use: 6-digit HS code
