6 codesHow the HS directory is organised
The Harmonized System is a hierarchical product nomenclature maintained by the World Customs Organization. Every product in international trade fits somewhere in its 21 sections and 97 chapters. Each chapter divides into headings (4 digits), which divide further into subheadings (6 digits). That six-digit subheading is the universal level — every WCO member country starts from the same code, then extends it for local detail.
This directory groups chapters into broader sections matching how the WCO itself sequences them — food and beverage first, then chemicals, materials, manufactures, and finally transport and miscellaneous categories. The chapter numbers above match WCO standard numbering exactly, so a code found here will work in any country's tariff lookup.
